My Passion... Poetry

Dont remember exactly since when, but poems never stopped amusing me!

Below is one of my poems that came to me spontaneously on a gloomy morning the day after the deadly Mumbai Terror Attacks[Nov 26, 2008]. Not a drop of ink was used while penning this as I wrote everything in my mobile! Its smaller compared to others written by me, but the intensity if emotions involved in writing this makes it an important one. It expresses a hope that we will rise from the situation and ensure justice to every victim of this shameless act by the enemy across the border.

RISE WE WILL

To thwart the venom of cross border enmity,
with our immortal ocean of spirit,
and the mighty power of steely will,
To beat the gloom of domination
with the bloom of Akhand Bharat,
To chase away the evil chill,
and break the devil's grill,
Rise we will...

Saluting the army and police for their ultimate sacrifice during the Mumbai terror. We owe them a lot.

Wonderfull lyrics from Godavari!! Hats off to Veturi!

I was just listening to this beautiful song from "Godavari", penned by Veturi.. The beauty is the lyricist mentioning the Swayamvaram episode in Ramayan and how Sita feels when she couldnt find Rama. I especially like the lines I gave in blue, which means the same Lord Rama who lifted Shiva's bow[said to be so heavy that no king/warrior[including Ravana] could lift it with all their might] with his left hand, can He lift the plaited hair of Sita while tying the knot!! This depicts a beautiful irony in the mind of a girl who couldnt make her dream boy marry her/like her, however powerfull he maybe!

iPhone Nano & iPhone Shuffle!!..Crazzzy folks!

Seems like the world just couldnt get away from the dazzle and over-the-top hype of the iPhone. Now they started speculating about new iPhone variants on the lines of iPods!!--iPhone Nano, and iPhone Shuffle!!
Below is the photo that they manufactured and a short description below:
iPhone nano, iPhone shuffle

The Authors of the post say:
"

iPhone Nano

All a cellphone needs is a phone, Web, and E-mail. That’s right: no SMS, no iPod. Of course, you can take pictures, notes and change the settings, if you really want to. No SMS: First mix E-mail with SMS and than make SMS disappear. In Japan, mobile phones just use E-mail. It’s cheap, simple and obvious. No iPod: keep it as a mobile phone, keep the mental model intact. Why does it feel weird to use a mobile phone as an MP3 player? Isn’t it nice to have everything in one device? No it’s not nice. It’s weird. The mere idea of listening to music on a phone makes me feel uncomfortable.

iPhone Shuffle

Just phone, mail, and the time. If you turn the device, you can read the mails. This little guy probably needs advanced speech recognition to add numbers, find your contacts quickly and write mail. Use side buttons to go through your library. You deal with the settings by plugging it into the USB port of your computer. If you’re bored you switch into shuffle mode to call a random dude. ;–)

"
Hahaha..Agreed that the iPhone do look cool, but it lacks basic features[No full bluetooth, no sms forwarding, no video recording, etc..]. Neither is it the first phone to have convergence of music, video n phone in one nor the first to have multi-touch screen. All the marketing gimmick can create a kind of hysteria that makes us believe any ordinary thing with some popular brand stuck on its face. Crazy people!!

G.E.’s Breakthrough Can Put 100 DVDs on a Disc

General Electric logoJust came across a news that GE has created a new lab produst that can store 100s of DVDs on a normal size DVD using holographic storage technology.
As a new york times report says:
"In G.E.’s approach, the holograms are scattered across a disc in a way that is similar to the formats used in today’s CDs, conventional DVDs and Blu-ray discs. So a player that could read microholographic storage discs could also read CD, DVD and Blu-ray discs. But holographic discs, with the technology G.E. has attained, could hold 500 gigabytes of data. Blu-ray is available in 25-gigabyte and 50-gigabyte discs, and a standard DVD holds 5 gigabytes."

The first research papers were published in the early 1960s but no major company has produced a labs version of it yet..
Wonder where the levels of storage is going!!

Have a look at my "Angels of Joy!!"

Today I created and dedicated a new blog to the angels that I admire and love..
They have been with me through the ups and downs and always created a joy when the chips were down.
They have so much positive energy around them!! For instance, while talking on phone this morning, I happened to see one "angel" moving around gracefully near me! And that cheered me up!! A simple glimpse is enough to light up the mood!! So have a look of my all new space dedicated to them here..Just love them!!

Brand called MTR-- Mavalli Tiffin Room!!

Today while reading an article on the 50 best restaurants in Indian Metros, it was such a pleasure to see the name of [MTR, Lal Bagh road] of Bangalore also being listed!! It brought so much nostalgia to the fore that I decided to put it in this public blog! MTR has always been a hallmark of quality, and the brand name that it gained largely through word of mouth is simply amazing to say the least! It is and will always remain my favourite brand in instant mix!
And the most interesting part is that I was not aware of its full name till I read the article in a magazine called "More"..!!!..It's Full name is "Mavalli Tiffin Room" which started off a s a small tiffin centre and now is a household name all over!!
Talking about brands, sometimes people go purely by brand name, which is not right. It has to come with that special mark, trust and class, just like MTR, Sony etc...[varies from person to person though!]

As always, With love..

Thoughts of the day..

Sometimes the distractions in our daily lives take us away from our real aspirations and source of joy. They create an illusion of joy and happiness, when in reality they are actually impediments to them.
Going through the amazing blog posts of Big B -- Amitabh Bachhan[bigb.bigadda.com], one feels that life of a celebrity is never so easy! It also teaches us something related to maintaining our focus on the main source of joy--our family, our aspirations, our dreams, etc.. to come up trumps over a period of time and maintain the same. Kudos to Amitabh ji for sharing his valuable experiences and thoughts with all of us without any intermediary between in their purest form, and on such a regular basis, that if you were to be unaware of his identity, you may think that he is a blogger by profession!! There is a lot to be learnt, and even more to be implemented if we were to get atleast 10% of success that he has achieved with single-minded dedication to his source of joy [acting]. Similarly each and everyone of us has some or the other source of joy, and something with which we measure our happiness and success. Its important that we find that and focus primarily on that. It may not be necessarily related to money or profession. It could be personal, or a pure internal joy that we all have in plenty. And for God's sake, I am not talking of any spirituality here! Its all about keeping things simple! As simple as telling yourself every morning "I want to be happy" [without any shade of selfishness]. Mind you, it works if done regularly..
Thats it for today..catch you all later!!

Leonardo da Vinci's Birthday[Apr 15, 1452]!!

Hi all..Just felt like sharing an article on my favorite genius on his birthday yesterday!!

Italian painter, draftsman, sculptor, architect, and engineer!!
born April 15, 1452, Anchiano, near Vinci, Republic of Florence [now in Italy]died May 2, 1519, Cloux [now Clos-Lucé], France
Remembering just a few of his accomplishments--

Leonardo da vinci

Leonardo's Last Supper (1495–98) is among the most famous paintings in the world. In its monumental simplicity, the composition of the scene is masterful;

The
Mona Lisa (c. 1503–06) set the standard for all future portraits.

Virgin and Child with St. Anne(c. 1502–16)oil on wood panel by Leonardo da Vinci. In the Louvre, Paris.

The Virgin of the Rocks in its first version (1483–86)

In about 1490 Leonardo da Vinci drew plans for a flying machine!

Nostalgia of the Godavari!

Asia's largest rail-cum-road bridge in Rajahmundry
As the waves of Godavari water keep flowing energetically the train crosses Asia's longest rail-cum-road bridge[photo on the left], those school days, sunny days with the affectionate neighbours, the school rickshaw driver[by the name Israel!!], the memories roll over, occassionally making the eyes moist.
Having been the place which has given me all those unforgettable childhood moments, it will always have a special place in my heart. All those memories create a virtual slideshow in front of my eyes as I listen to this song. Those virtual images look almost real!! Add to it the melodious, soothing and evergreen voice of SPB, and you have an intoxicating song which is a kind of pure refreshment!
Some of the most touching lyrics have been from the below song from the Telugu movie "Godavari". Below are the lyrics and translation for those who doesnt know Telugu:

Gushing waters of Godavari
Godavari is gushing and the paddy fields are swinging with joy.
Its the relief in the way, the lifeline of this area
It ends our struggles and and it is our sacrosanct literature[the vedas]
its the river where Shabari mixed into and the flower-sprinkled way of Lord Rama's epic [Ramayana]

spread the sail and speed up the boat
make a way using the stars as the light
just like swimming against the flow in life
friendships, families, naughty chirpy astrology by parrot
the dosas get a good price as soon as they were prepared!
the image of the daily chores with homes becoming boats
as if the water is asking all the beauty of this picturesque place with its reflection
what did our Lord Rama lack here? He has all the glory and grandeur here!
in the celebration called river, on the boat,
He is the Lord.

The chilli fields around put a kind of red vermilion over this river's temples
looks like Ravana cant wait!
don't know what the eyes told to our mother Sita,
clouds of mistrust spreads over the looking eyes,
loneliness in an alien world never seen yet,
as the river laughs, not being able to wash the black Paapi hills!!

As always with love..

Sri Rama Navami...

Sri Rama NavamiRam Navami is a Hindu holiday. It falls on the ninth day of the Hindu lunar year (or Chaitra Masa Suklapaksha Navami), and is a celebration of the birthday of the Hindu god Rama.
The story behind Ram's birth goes as below: Dasarath, The King of Avadha Kingom had three wives, Kaushalya, Sumithra and Kaikeyi. Their greatest worry was that they had no children. At that time Maharshi Vasist suggests him to perform PuthraKamesti Yagna, through which he can have children. He also tells him to bring Maharshi RushyaShrunga to perform this Yagna for him. Immmediately King Dasharath gives his concent, and heads to Maharshi RushyaShrunga's ashram, to get him. Maharshi agrees and will accompany Dasharath to Ayodhya(Capital of Avadha) and performs the yagna. As the result of yagna, Yagneshwar appears and hands Dasarath a bowl of Payasam and asks him to give it to his wives. Dasharath gives one half of the payasam to his elder wife Kausalya, and another half to his younger wife Kaikeyi. They both give half of their portions to Sumithra. After few days all three Queens conceive. On the nineth day(Navami) of Chaithra Masa(First month in hindhu calender),at noon Kaushlya gives birth to Lord Sri Ram, Kaikeyi gives birth to Bharath, and Sumithra to twin boys, Lakshman and Shatrughan.
Lord Ram is seventh incarnation of Lord Vishnu, who takes birth on earth when Adharma over rules Dharma. He protects all his devoties by vanishing the roots of Adharma. Lord Ram was born on earth to destroy the demon named Ravan.
Hindus normally perform Kalyanotsavam (marriage celebration) with small murtis of Rama and Sita in their houses, and at the end of the day the deity is taken to a procession on the streets. This day also marks the end of the nine-day utsavam called Chaitra Navaratri (Maharashtra) or Vasanthothsavam (Andhra Pradesh) (festival of Spring), which starts with Gudi Padwa (Maharashtra) or Ugadi (South India). According to recent astrological studies, his year of birth is considered to be January 10, 5114 B.C

Some highlights of this day:

Kalyanam (Ceremonial wedding performed by temple priests) at Bhadrachalam on the banks of the river Godavari in Khammam district.
Panakam, a sweet drink prepared on this day with jaggery and pepper.
Procession of idols in the evening that is accompanied with play of water and colours.
For the occasion, Hindus are supposed to fast (or restrict themselves to a specific diet). Temples are decorated and readings of the Ramayana take place. Along with Shri Ram, people also pray Sita (Ram's wife), Lakshman (his brother who went on exile with him) and Hanuman (monkey god, ardent devotee of Ram and Ram's chief of army).
Sri-Ramnavami is dedicated to the memory of Lord Rama. It occurs on the ninth day (navami). The festival commemorates the birth of Rama who is remembered for his prosperous and righteous reign.

Microsoft focuses on 3D camera company

Microsoft logo, Buying 3D digital camera cmpanyMicrosoft is reported to be buying 3D digital camera company 3DV Systems for $34m, giving it remote gesture recognition technology.
Israel-based 3DV Systems is a venture capital-backed startup that has raised about $38m from investors. The company was founded in 1996 by two Israeli defence industry scientists who had worked on electro-optics technology for missiles. They developed and patented technology that could work out the depth relationships of objects in a digital camera's field of view, in real time with high resolution. This was embodied in a chipset and in the ZCam 3D camera product range, now available in web-cam format.
The DeepC chipset hardware computes the camera's distance from objects it 'sees' using a time-of-flight principle and its technology is described thus: "The Depth information is captured by emitting pulses of infra-red light to all objects in the scene and sensing the reflected light from the surface of each object. All objects in the scene are then arranged in layers according to the distance information sensed by the D pixels in the camera, providing the Depth information in real time as standard black and white video where the grey-level correlates to relative distance. Colour data is provided using a normal colour imaging sensor."
Real time translates to 60 frames per second and the depth resolution is accurate to 1-2cm. The company thinks its technology is appropriate for "PC-based gaming and for background replacement in web-conferencing." One aspect of it is that there is little use made of the host system's CPU.
3DV states that the ZCam: "provides home users [with] revolutionary gesture recognition capabilities in addition to real-time background replacement, enabling them to control video games and personal space through intuitive body gestures and immerse themselves with virtual reality."
The attraction for Microsoft, with its Xbox 360 games console and Surface gesture recognition system, is immediately obvious. XBox360 game players could control the action by moving their hands in front of the device. This would give Microsoft some kind of answer to Nintendo's Wii.
Microsoft said it: "does not comment on rumors or speculation." No-one was available to answer inquiries at 3DV as the employees are away from the office at a company event until Sunday.

Google plans fifth birthday present for Gmail users!!

Gmail's 5th birthday, Gmail logo
Google will announce the next step in Gmail’s evolution, a new product with “a European multilingual angle,” on Monday.
At an event in Brussels to mark Gmail's fifth birthday, Google will look at the impact of cloud computing on how people manage their daily tasks, review Gmail’s evolution to date and announce the next step in its progression, the company wrote in an invitation.
“Google is celebrating with the launch of an exciting new product,” said the invitation.
Gmail, a free Web-based e-mail service with the then-unheard-of storage capacity of 1GB and Google’s trademark search capability, launched in 2004.
Google’s playful announcement of the service, dated April 1, proclaimed "Search is Number Two Online Activity -- Email is Number One; 'Heck, Yeah,' Say Google Founders."
It looked like an April Fool's Day joke at a time when Yahoo and Microsoft were offering Web mail accounts with under 10MB of storage, with Yahoo offering an upgrade to 100MB for $50 a year. It turned out to be true, prompting Yahoo and Microsoft to upgrade their offerings a few weeks later.
Five years after its launch, Gmail now offers more than 7GB of storage but is still labeled as a beta version.
Monday's announcement is not about the end of the beta trial, though: “It has more of a European multilingual angle to it,” a Google spokesman said.
Google already offers multilingual versions of the Gmail interface. Initially available only in English, it now comes in 52 language options available, including most European languages and many in non-Roman writing systems, such as Chinese, Japanese and Korean.
The company has long offered tools that will translate a Web page on the fly into a language specified by the user. It is also experimenting with a Translated Search service, still in beta, that allows surfers to make a search request in one language and receive results in another, then have those automatically translated into the first language. The tool is particularly useful for those searching for information that is not readily available in their native language, and for which they would have difficulty formulating an appropriate search query.
Most likely, the new product is a Gmail Labs feature that lets you translate messages written in a foreign language. This is the screenshot of the feature, which will probably be another great use of the Google Translate API.

https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhOwjz1PkADEt0woo26KwFWankgO4NizFroVcyoF1x-1sQFoVoBssQsEp268CXg5cnxa0zSKfMOdLn9NDUSePw07iJ_oRe189BuEA7rBz5zfIICi42dzyQAOwfp0xIbm8cGWwWouwE56OXS/s640/gmail-translate.png
Similar features that use Google Translate have been implemented in Google ReaderYouTubeGoogle MapsPicasa Web Albums, but the future is a powerful client that translates pages on the fly.

On the first birthday of Google's online email service Gmail[on 1 April 2005], the Gmail team has rolled out some great new features. Every user's email account storage has been doubled to an astounding 2GB and users now have the ability to use some new snazzy rich text formatting features including fonts, bullets, colors, and highlighting.
Guessing what would be the surprise this time!

Facts about Ugadi and related info about yugas..

Ugadi Picture, Telugu GreetingsUgadi (Teluguఉగాది; Kannada: ಯುಗಾದಿ, from yuga+aadi, yuga is era, aadi means start. The start of an era) is the new year's day for the people of the Deccan region of India. While the people of Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh use the term Ugadi for this festival, the people of Maharashtra term the same festival, observed on the same day, Gudi Padwa. Sindhis, people from Sindh, celebrate the same day as their New Year day Cheti Chand.[1]
It falls on a different day every year because the Hindu calendar is a lunisolar calendar. The Saka calendar begins with the month of Chaitra (March/April) and Ugadi marks the first day of the new year.

The years would have names in Sanskrit. The name of the one that starts on 27th March 2009 is Sri Virodhi. The one that ended is Sarvadhari.

World's cheapest car set to roll out in India

Tata nano launch in India

ANIL:
Kudos to Ratan Tata for making his dream project come true despite several obstacles!
Tata Motors was set Monday to launch the world's cheapest car amid predictions the vehicle could transform how millions travel and fears it would bring more traffic jams on Indian roads.

Tycoon Ratan Tata was due to unveil the four-door jelly-bean-shaped car with tear-drop lights at a "revolutionary high-tech" audio-visual show in India's financial hub Mumbai, a spokesman said.

The car is slated to cost just 100,000 rupees ($2,000) for the no-frills version that has a two-cylinder 623 cc, rear-mounted engine with a top speed of 105 kilometres (65 miles) per hour.

Ratan Tata, an architect by training and head of the sprawling tea-to-steel Tata Group, dreamed up the car to get poor Indians off unsafe motorcycles and into safer cars.

"There's no safety in two-wheelers especially with the whole family," said New Delhi resident Ganesh Khand, 38, who now has a motorbike but wants a Nano to be able to transport his wife and two daughters safely.

But the affluent are eyeing the car too.

"This is a value-for-money car," said Hasmukh Kakadia, 39, a Mumbai investment analyst.

The basic model has a four-speed manual transmission, no air conditioning, electric windows or power steering, but deluxe versions will be available.

The launch comes at a tough time for India's top vehicle maker, hit by a slowing domestic economy, a credit crunch and a deepening world financial crisis that has hurt sales of British luxury marques Jaguar and Land Rover which it bought last year for 2.3 billion dollars.

But demand is expected to be hot for the Nano with just 30,000 to 50,000 of cars likely to be sold in the first year because of limited production capacity -- a fraction of the original target of 250,000, auto analysts said.

Dealers say they've been flooded with queries about the car whose debut was delayed by several months when violent protests over the acquisition of farmland for the project forced the Tatas to shift the Nano plant from West Bengal state to Gujarat, known as more business-friendly.

But the Gujarat plant won't be ready until late 2010, meaning production must come from existing factories, reducing output.

Earlier this month, Ratan Tata unveiled a European Nano sporting airbags and leather trim. That car will hit the market by 2011 but be costlier than in India due to extra features.

Tata has been likened by India's media to US automobile pioneer Henry Ford for conceiving the car.

"I observed families riding on two-wheelers, the father driving the scooter, his young kid standing in front of him, his wife seated behind him holding a little baby," Tata said when showing the prototype in 2008.

"It led me to wonder whether one could conceive of a safe, affordable, all-weather form of transport for such a family."

But environmentalists fear the Nano will clog India's already crowded roads and add to choking pollution.

"Every car that goes on the road is going to use road space. We're only adding to congestion" and increasing pollution, said Rajendra Pachauri, head of the UN's climate panel which won the 2007 Nobel Prize.

Google adds 'Undo Send' button to Gmail

"Undo Send" option in Google Mail!! Probably the first of its kind!
Gmail, Logo, Amazing
An 'Undo Send' button has been added to Gmail

Just came across an exciting new feature from gmail today! Gmail is already brimming with features and customization, and this is one of the very interesting ones!! Probably the first of its kind! Users now have five seconds to abort that embarrassing message
Google has given Gmail users the ability to recall messages they send via email. A new Undo Send button will hold messages for five seconds after the user clicks Send.
This is intended to give users a chance to retrieve messages in cases where they have addressed the email to the wrong person, sent the wrong subject heading or made an error in the email content.
"This feature can't pull back an email that's already gone; it just holds your message for five seconds so you have the chance to hit the panic button," said Michael Leggett, Gmail user experience designer, in the Gmail blog.
"And don't worry: if you close Gmail or your browser crashes in those few seconds, we'll still send your message."
To add the feature, users need to turn on the Undo Send option in Gmail under Settings. They will then see a new 'undo' link on every sent mail confirmation.

Lagaan, Jodha Akbar..Rahman's Best!!

Cool Music IconAs we continue to admire the success that A.R Rahman has got with the Oscar-Winning "Slumdog Millionaire", its interesting to note that the best songs from A.R are not just these.. There are far better compositions from this genius!--My favorite are Lagaan and Jodha Akbar.
Whereas most music directors record the final track first, with all the orchestration and get the singer to dub the last, A.R invariably gets the singer to dub on a base rhythm track first and does the
orchestration later, as he wants the orchestration to rise from the depth of the feeling in the singer’s voice. That’s the reason why with every one of his tracks you can’t recognize where the music ends and the voice begins, and vice versa. Each and every instrument is made to be played with the same emotional depth as that is in the singer’s voice.
That makes him stand out from the other music composers of this era.

Update on Spider-Man 4 and 5!!

Spiderman 4 movie logoI have been eagerly awaiting some fresh news about spidey-4 and 5...And here it is..some kind of relief to all spidey fans out here!!:

Sony Pictures have announced their plans for not just doing Spider-Man 4 but creating Spider-Man 4 and Spider-Man 5 simultaneously to save time and money (as done with Matrix 2&3, and Pirates of the Caribbean 2&3).
Tobey Maguire is set to return, and he will get a nice $50 million salary for it. Sam Raimi as well is attached to helm and James Vanderbilt (Zodiac, The Rundown) does the screenwriting.
If Kirsten Dunst will return in the role as Mary Jane Watson is not yet decided.

Hope it works as planned and the movie hits theatres 2011-2012!!
Waiting with bated breath for developments on this!..

Nearly 80 pc Lok Sabha MPs are graduates!

[Indian Parliament]

Hi all! Contrary to popular belief that most of our Parliamentarians is not an educated lot, official records show that nearly 80 per cent of them have graduation as their minimum academic qualification.

As many as 428 out of 543 lawmakers have graduation or above as their educational qualification as per Lok Sabha records. While 157 Parliamentarians are post-graduate, 22 are doctorates.

The official data show that while there was a decrease in the number of under-matriculate MPs from 112 in the first Lok Sabha to 19 in the present Lower House, there was a substantial increase in the number of those having post-graduate degrees from 85 to 157.

There are as many as 22 Parliamentarians with doctorates, including Raghuvansh Prasad (RJD), M Ramadass (PMK), Rameshar Oraon, Rajesh Kumar Mishra (both Congress) and Kuwar Devendra Singh Yadav (SP).

Senior Parliamentarian and External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee, a double post-graduate, is among the highly qualified members besides Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee who is a Bar-at-Law.

Besides the senior Parliamentarians, the young MPs also contributed in the increase in the number of highly-qualified lawmakers.

Some of those noted MPs include Rahul Gandhi (MPhil), Jitin Prasada (MBA), industrialist-turned MP Naveen Jindal (MBA) and Milind Deora who has a degree in business administration.

Jyotiraditya Scindia and Sachin Pilot, also influential youth leaders, hold masters degree in business administration.

The four Es of great leaders --by Jack Welch

JACK WELCH FORMER CHAIRMAN & CEO | GE
After a while I got the hang of the characteristics that made some people better than others at setting the right goals, reaching them the right way, and doing both in the right amount of time, which is what leadership is when you get right down to it.

Basically, my process assesses four essential traits of leadership (each one starting with an E, a nice coincidence). One, successful leaders have tons of positive Energy. They can go-go-go; they love action and relish change. Two, they have the ability to Energize Others — they love people and can inspire them to move mountains when they have to. Three, they have the Edge, the courage to make tough yes-or-no decisions. And finally, they can Execute.

A leader’s intelligence has to have a strong emotional component. He must be able to withstand the heat, handle setbacks and, when those lucky moments arise, enjoy success with equal parts of joy and humility. No doubt emotional intelligence is more rare than book smarts, but my experience says it is more important in the making of a leader.

When compassion won the battle

EMPEROR ASHOKA

There are few events in ancient Indian history that continue to grab as much attention as Ashoka’s warrior king of the times and is even said to have killed his brothers in a fit of rage — was the Kalinga War.

All this changed after the war, which took place around 265 BCE and, according to Ashoka’s edicts, claimed over 100,000 lives. The carnage deeply scarred Ashoka and radically changed the nature of his empire.

Ashoka embraced Buddhism and adopted ahimsa as his official policy. In one of his edicts, Ashoka declared: “The killing, death or deportation of a hundredth, or even a thousandth part of those who died during the conquest of Kalinga now pains Beloved-of-the-Gods. Now Beloved-of-the-Gods thinks that even those who do wrong should be forgiven where forgiveness is possible.”

The latter half of Ashoka’s reign was marked by acts of piety and tolerance. Ashoka turned his attention to building stupas — including the Sanchi stupa — rest houses and roads. A policy of accommodation and alliance with neighbouring kingdoms was followed. He also sent out Buddhist missionaries to distant places. The decision that Ashoka took on the bloody plains of Kalinga transformed him from a bloodthirsty conqueror to an apostle of peace. That is how India and the world remember him.

Ashokan pillars, which were strewn across his enormous empire, are now the emblem of India and the dharmachakra (the wheel of righteous duty), that crowned the columns, has found a place in India’s flag.
